We have been finding out about the Chinese New Year Festival. It is a very special celebration in many parts of Asia. The date of the festival is based on the lunar calendar. It lasts for 15 days and starts on a new moon in January or February. One of the traditions during this festival is to give a red envelope to family and friends for good luck. Red envelopes are also given at other special celebrations, such as weddings and birthdays. The colour red is important in Chinese tradition and signifies good fortune. To find out about them we read books and used the interactive white board in room 10. We made our own special red envelopes, placing good luck symbols on the outside and filling them with 'lucky money' coins. We will give them to someone in our family or a friend.
